Tangled - Walt Disney's 50th Animated Film

Today I got the chance to watch the 50th animated feature of Walt Disney series – Tangled. The movie was an adaptation from the German fairy Tale Rupunzel and features excellent animation and a sweet story.

The movie is narrated by a thief who goes by the name Flynn Rider (Zachary Levi). The story starts with a magical drop of light from the sun, which falls on the earth, giving rise to a flower with great healing prowess. The flower is discovered by a witch Gothel (Donna Murphy) who guards the flower from being discovered by others. She uses it to stay young and never grow old.

Meanwhile, the queen who is about to deliver a baby falls terribly ill. The royal guards in their pursuit of a cure stumble upon the healing flower, which is made into a broth and fed to the queen. The queen heals and gives birth to a daughter, with golden hair. To celebrate the child’s birth the royal couple send paper lanterns into the sky.

Gothel, who starts growing old after the loss of the flower, learns that the princesses’ hairs have healing ability too. She sneaks into the palace and tries to cut some hair. Once cut, the hair turns auburn, losing its healing ability. Realizing that the only way to stay young, is to have the young princess with her, Gothel steals the princess and takes her away.

The princess is brought up by Gothel, as Rapunzel (Mandy Moore), in a forest and atop a tower, with no doors. Gothel uses her long hair to climb the tower and also to stay young. Rapunzel grows up in the tower, with her pet Pascal – a chameleon – with no knowledge of the outside world. Her only glimpse of the outside world are the lights that float in the sky on her birthday, which in reality are the paper lanterns flown by the royal couple and their subjects, hoping for the return of the lost princess. Rupunzel longs to find out what these lights are.

Meanwhile, Flynn Rider steals the princesses’ tiara from the palace with his accomplice. While being chased by the royal guards, he abandons his accomplice and stumbles upon Rapunzel in the tower. Rupunzel, who is scared of the stranger, knocks him unconscious and hides the tiara. She strikes a deal with Flynn to show her the lanterns for returning the tiara, after he mother refuses to let her out.
The adventures of Flynn and Rapunzel during their journey and their love forms the rest of the story, which unfolds beautifully.

The scene where Flynn and Rapunzel witness the release of the paper lanterns is awesome and the whole movie boasts of excellent animation. The movie has been made with a staggering budget of $260 million, the most spent for an animation film.

Rating: 4/5.
