Recently watched the Golden Globe awards and Natalie Portman winning the best actress for her performance in Black Swan, prompted us to watch Black Swan. My experiences of watching academy award winning movies has not been good, but a cold and boring weekend, with nothing better to do landed us in front of the movie theater and we decided to give it a go.
The movie is about a ballet dancer Nina Sayers, played by Portman, who has been cast by her director to play the Swan queen. Nina, a brilliant dancer, plays the part of the white swan to perfection – portraying innocence, vulnerability and purity; but is unable to give justice to the role of the black swan, which requires cruelty and to be seductive.
The story unfolds how Nina is able to overcome all hurdles, including an overbearing mother, growing competition amongst the ballet troupe, her own hallucinations and insecurity to give a performance at the opening of the opera which receives a standing ovation from the audience.
The movie is intense and shows the hard effects of pressure on an ambitious young girl. There are some scenes in the movie which may be a little over the top, but on the whole, it is a wonderfully staged film. Stunning performance by Natalie Portman, the story and direction of Darren Aronofsky makes this movie a must watch.
Rating: 4/5
