For the Elephant lovers, here is a place to get closer to these majestic beings. Dubare is an elephant camp with a number of elephants trained to interact with humans. There are trained naturalists around who will help you understand elephants and their surroundings.
We spent a weekend at Dubare enjoying nature's raw beauty, the wildlife and the vegetation. The Jungle Lodges and Resorts (JLR) group have a few cottages at Dubare and we booked a cottage for our stay.
We drove from Bangalore via Mysore, Kushalnagar, Siddapura to Dubare. A little while on Siddapura Main Road you can find a board indicating JLR Dubare elephant Camp board. A kilometer drive from the board would take you to the banks of River Cauvery. We had a boat from JLR waiting to pick us up. There are parking spaces for JLR, so we parked our car there and took the boat. Once you cross the river you reach the beautiful cottages of JLR.
We spent the first day doing bush walks and jungle safaris. There are naturalists who will accompany you on the tours guiding you through the walks and the safaris and also providing information regarding the wildlife and vegetation of the place. You can also spend time listening to the sounds of the river while lying on the hammock provided in the front of every cottage. Evenings, however, are a lot more thrilling. There is no electricity in the region and JLR runs a generator for its needs. The surroundings are pitch dark and the noises of the insects and animals of the wild will initially give some goosebumps, but that just takes a few minutes of getting used to.
We could mange a good nights sleep amidst roars from elephants in the stable nearby. As we opened the door to the balcony in the morning we were pleasantly surprised to see the mist on the river Cauvery. The fresh air and the soothing early morning sights are all that we needed to feel fresh and awake !
We went on a coracle ride that day and also some elephant rides. we were also allowed to bathe elephants. There are elephants of different age groups, so you can choose between the big ones or the little ones to bathe.
Being to Dubare , we were able to understand that these gigantic, majestic looking animals are in fact very calm and entertaining!
